What an opening sequence should do.

The codes and conventions of an opening sequence are:
  • Firmly establish time and place.
  • Introduce and establish character.
  • Set up enigmas (That are resolved.)
  • Set up the initial equilibrium which is disrupted (Now or later.)
  • Reassure the audience by demonstrating the conventions of the chosen genre.
  • Follow the typical narrative structure.
